Bonsai has a reputation for being difficult. It is not. Bonsai tree care for beginners comes down to four things: light, water, trimming and a little food. Get those roughly right and your tree will look better every year.
1. Give it bright, indirect light
Most indoor bonsai are happiest near a bright window, out of harsh afternoon sun. If your tree starts stretching toward the glass with long, pale growth, it wants more light. Turn the pot every week or two so it grows evenly.
2. Water when the top of the soil is dry
Check the soil with your finger every couple of days. Water thoroughly when the top feels dry, then let the pot drain. That single habit prevents most beginner problems.
3. Trim a little, often
When a shoot grows past the outline you like, snip it back to a pair of leaves. Small, regular trims keep the shape tight and encourage fuller growth. You do not need special tools to start; clean, sharp scissors are enough.
4. Feed during the growing season
From spring through early fall, a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength every few weeks keeps a bonsai healthy. Ease off in winter when growth slows.
